Cyclone Tracy remembered with ‘Blow Me Down’

Cyclone Tracy struck Darwin on the eve of 24th of December in 1974.  Powerfunk produced a video for the 40th celebration, which features Darwin band The NEO interlaced with archival images and showed the destruction the Cyclone Tracy left behind.

It is believed that Tracy destroyed more than 70 per cent of Darwin’s buildings, including 80 per cent of houses. More than 25,000 out of the 47,000 inhabitants  were left homeless. Over 30,000 people were evacuated. Some of  the band member’s mothers went down south with their kids in their bellies when the cyclone struck.

Interestingly, Cyclone Tracy was at the heart of creating the song ‘Blow Me Down’, and therefore music was perfect when the opportunity came up to produce a video piece. The NEO released their song the following year on their Near Earth Objects album. Follow The NEO here.
